Prior to reading the following, please bear in mind that Karate is a sport and should always be fun and enjoyable. LBKA takes a more unique approach than more traditional schools and tries to foster an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere through games, laughter and greater communication between members.
This should also be read in conjunction with the LBKA Code of Conduct.
- All members must bow when entering and exiting the dojo. This displays a sign of respect for the area we train in and those that train within it. In the dojo especially, we must always endeavour to exhibit all Codes of The Bushido.
- All students must bow at the beginning and end of class when the dojo instructor directs you to. This displays respect to our fellow students, black belts and instructors.
- When beginning partnered work, whether it is drills, sparring or self-defences; we must always bow to one another at the beginning and the end of working with that partner.
- Sparring is always non-contact. If a technique “gets in” - that is, finds a gap and simulates contact being made without being blocked or evaded, the recipient must always take a step back, and give a nod of respect to show they acknowledge the technique was successful. A word of encouragement is strongly endorsed also. This simulates a contact scenario if the technique had got in. The recipient of the technique would not still be continuing in the same manner if the technique had made contact. We must always respect our partner.
- Students must never intentionally injure or make excessive contact with a fellow student. Accidents can occur, and limits should be pushed, but students should always be in control of their techniques.
- Students should make their best efforts not to distract other students in a unproductive or negative manner.
- All members should address black belts by their appropriate tittle, e.g. Shihan, Sensei, Sempai etc.
- Students should endeavour to be punctual and ready to go at the commencement of class. This includes having belts on and jewellery removed. Try to be considerate to others by not delaying the beginning of class.
- Gi's should always be kept reasonably clean and presentable. Only white or black t-shirts are to be worn underneath the Gi.
- Members should always bend onto their right knee when placing and removing their belt. This demonstrates respect to your belt which you have worked hard to attain. Belts should never touch the floor.
- Members should always work as a team and offer each other advice and feedback, not only on areas of improvement, but also on areas where the student is excelling.
- In order to participate in sparring, students must wear all protective equipment. Our protective equipment is specifically designed to protect your partner as well as yourself. If any item is missing students will be unable to participate in sparring. For females this includes, mouthguard, shin insteps and hand protective mitts. A head guard is optional. Males sparring equipment includes a groin guard.
- Students always shake hands with their partner after sparring. This demonstrates respect for one and other, and any accidently contact has been forgiven.
- The Code of The Bushido should always be emulated in the dojo and best efforts made outside of the dojo.
