Prior to reading the following, please bear in mind that karate is a sport and should always be fun and enjoyable. LBKA takes a more unique approach than more traditional schools and tries to foster a more enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere through games, laughter and greater communication between members.

This should also be read in conjunction with the LBKA's Dojo Etiquette.

  • All Jewellery and shoes (excluding martial arts shoes) should be taken off prior to commencing class.
  • Finger and toenails should be kept short so as not to scratch a fellow class member.
  • Karate is an ancient art and was developed as self-defence. Students should never use karate unless in a self-defence situation. The best defence is to walk away. We must remember the literal meaning of karate, "empty hand".
  • Students must never bully, or assault another person. They should only practice their karate in a controlled environment, and if a junior, under adult supervision.
  • Disciplinary actions can range from simply letting the student know they are doing the wrong thing, to expulsion from the school. The latter is extremely rare as we always try to guide the student to bettering themselves through other teaching and disciplinary techniques. These may include, push-ups, temporary separation from class in a "time-out", or discussing the issue with the student.
  • Members should always work as a team and offer each other advice and feedback, not only on areas of improvement, but also on areas where the student is excelling.
  • Parent’s behaviour can often mould their child's behaviour and it is therefore crucial for parents to support the instructor’s teachings. Students are only at the school for 1 1/2 hours per week, unless they are cross-training or participating in more than one class. Under these time constraints it is important for parents to have an understanding of the student’s progress.
  • It is compulsory for brown belts to cross-train, thereby reducing the time to attain a black belt. By cross-training, a student is essentially doubling their training time. Cross-training is also strongly encouraged as students are able to work with different partners and instructors gaining greater experience.
  • Students should be considerate of others and it is therefore recommended students put their shin insteps on prior to class starting. This minimises the time to get their gear on in class and maximising sparring time. It can often be unfair on the rest of class if members are waiting on one student.
  • Any inappropriate language or gestures will be disciplined accordingly.
  • Grading assessments are done only by the dojo instructors. The students are nurtured and encouraged in every way to reach their goals. Parents and/or students are requested not to question the judgement of the instructor but are encouraged to seek their advice on how to reach their objectives.
  • If a students misses a class they are encouraged to make the class up by attending another dojo. Students who only train once a week are allowed to have no more than two days off per grading span.
  • The Code of The Bushido should always be emulated in the dojo and best efforts made outside of the dojo.

The word Bushido (武士道) literally translates as “The Way Of The Warrior” and encompasses an entire philosophy with origins in Zen Buddhism, Shintoism and Confucianism.

The conceptual origins of the Bushido ideal appear in the earliest of Japanese historical literature – the Kojiki written in 712. The son of Emperor Keiko is described as skillful with the sword, sincere, loyal and unyielding whilst also being poetic, artistic and compassionate. With this artistry came chivalry – a sense of service with respect, politeness, beauty and honour.

However, the roots of the word itself are found in the text Shoku Nihongi (a book describing the early history of Japan written in the year 797). In this text, “bushi” referred to the educated warrior poet and “bushido” became the “warrior -way” (bushi-do). By the 12th century, the order of and the word meaning Samurai was well established in Japanese phraseology and became almost synonymous with “bushi”. Influenced by Buddhism and Confucianism the ideals of “Bushido” developed into a more formal code over time. Initially this code was unwritten but understood amongst those of “bushido”. Literature from the 13th – 16th centuries clearly depict the “cultivated warrior” and by the 17th century formal expressions of the philosophy of Bushido from great masters became well documented.

Bushido expanded and formalized the earlier code of the Samurai and encompassed a number of virtues often summarized in 7 tenets. Although these tenets do not describe the totality of Bushido, it nonetheless captures the spirit and characteristics of the philosophy.

  • 義 – Gi – Rectitude (moral righteousness)
  • 勇 – Yū – Courage
  • 仁 – Jin – Benevolence
  • 礼 – Rei – Respect / Politeness
  • 誠 – Makoto or 信 - Shin– Honesty
  • 名誉 – Meiyo – Honour, Glory
  • 忠義 – Chūgi – Loyalty

Others sometimes added are:

  • - Kō - Filial piety
  • 智 - Chi - Wisdom
  • 悌 - Tei - Care for the aged

Along with these virtues, Bushido holds justice, love, sincerity and self control in high regard.

In the modern world, expression of these virtues may find forms other than that classically thought of as “warrior like” leading to contemporary writings on the concept of “Modern Bushido”.

Such writings emphasise that the warrior protects and defends because he / she recognises the value of others and so serves his / her community. This may be expressed in a simple action such as ensuring one’s companion reaches their car or home safely in the night; or perhaps serving the needs of others not well positioned to help themselves. Rather than prey on the vulnerable or ignore them leaving them to risk their own way, the modern “bushi” is there to help, serve and protect according to the ancient virtues encompassed by “the way”, with chivalry, artistry and beauty.

We take a holistic view to our martial art. Our badge is in a triangular shape. Each facet of the shape represents each of the three factors that form our belief in building a perfect martial artist. They are Mind, Body and Spirit.

We try to maintain a healthy mind set to concentrate on developing our skills. These skills range from social, intellectual, and technical. A healthy mind contributes to a healthy body.

Maintaining a healthy body enables one to achieve new skills and develop their technical skills. Developing one’s core strength further develops their strength of technique, accuracy, and stamina.

Spirit is what one develops with the combination of a healthy mind set and physical endurance. Another way to describe spirit is determination. There are occasions when one is at the end of their physical stamina and they need to continue, the spirit takes over and pushes the body to new and greater limits never achieved before.

Using the three facets of Mind, Body and Spirit our karate students further develop their self confidence and self esteem. This helps them conduct their lives in a well balanced and well mannered nature. Success in life then comes naturally no matter what the karateka does from day to day.

Lion Bushido Karate is not just a sport, but a way of life.
